Chad Mackey grew up in a small town in North Carolina. While on vacation with his family at Myrtle Beach in the summer of 2002, Chad, then 15, met Sara Kennedy, a fellow teen hailing from a similar small town in Kentucky. The two quickly becoming great friends.
In June of 2004, Sara was diagnosed with rhabdomyoscarcoma, an extremely rare childhood cancer. Fighting for nine months, she tragically lost her battle in the spring of 2005. Chad got busy living by picking up a guitar and releasing an album featuring some songs inspired by Sara's legacy. 'The Road' is a "critically-acclaimed and heart-tugging musical joy-ride in celebration of life." In memory of Sara, her parents founded The SaraCare Fund, which provides assistance and comfort for pediatric and young adult patients Kentucky Children's Hospital where Sara was cared for.
