Hailing from San Diego, California, Jonathan Dimsdale began playing piano at a young age. Like many gifted pianists, he eventually became restless with classical piano and began delving into jazz and rock, playing in a handful of bands before falling in love with piano composition. However, according to Jonathan, his life, perhaps, did not truly begin until shortly after his 20th birthday when doctors found and removed a cancerous tumor in his appendix. Secondary pathology later found the lesion to be benign, but the emotional damage had been done.
In the days and weeks after the operation, Jonathan began feverishly composing with a newfound passion and need to express himself. While he steadily regained his health, he suffered the loss of several friends and family to the disease he had fortunately evaded. The art of his survivorship is embodied in Smoke on the Horizon, his 2005 debut album of solo piano compositions. Today, Jonathan remains active in cancer advocacy and is using his cancer scare to make a difference in the lives of others.
